[What did Mrs. Brisby do today, one may ask. Usually there is no answer, as she does perfectly fine keeping to herself.

Not today. She shifts a bit uncomfortably, fidgeting. It's clear enough, at least, that she is incredibly uncomfortable.]

Can... someone explain what a "pet store" is to me? Or... explain what a "pet" really is.

I don't think I've ever seen such a dreadful and uncomfortable place...

Oh, I... my name is Mrs. Brisby.

I simply don't know what to suggest or to offer, other than a change of topic to possibly help you feel more calm and at ease.

And I guess we didn't introduce ourselves at the start of this conversation. I am Kanaya Maryam. It is nice to meet you, Mrs. Brisby.

I'm afraid I don't have much to talk about, myself. Ah... I suppose I'm not very good with conversation unless it's with my neighbors.

Kanaya... that's a very lovely name.

Hmm. In my experience, one method of opening a conversation is to seek a common experience or interest to discuss.

Oh. Thank you. Yours is also an interesting name. I don't think I see how to spell it, though.

Ah, well... there's not much that I do. I just... take care of my children. Although, without them here, I just end up sewing to distract myself.

Oh, well, just a moment. I'm not very good at writing, but my husband taught me how to before he passed away.

[She very briefly grabs a small piece of paper, taking a quill and ink and carefully (and sloppily) writing her name. It... takes a bit, and she has to sound out the syllables.]

'Children'... so you are a, a parent? A mother? What is it like, being a mother? We don't raise our own young, so I still don't have much of an idea what that's like.

Oh, sewing? Do you make your own clothing?

[Kanaya leans in to study it, taking a moment its completion to double check the letters.]

Oh. Ha, I see. I was thinking that Mrs. was your first name for some reason. Thank you for showing me.

Oh, well... I...

[Gah! Too many questions.]

Well, yes, "Mrs." just means I'm married. And my husband taught me how to sew. I made clothing for my children.

And... being a mother...

Being a mother is... like nothing else in the world. It can be tiring, and difficult, of course. Being a mother is very difficult, because you're responsible not only for yourself, but for every one of your children.

But... but I wouldn't give up my children for the world. I love them... I love them so much. I would do anything to keep my children safe, and happy, and healthy.

Then it's one of the titles like "Miss" or "-san" then, but it says something about your position in a family too. Okay.

[This thing of parents is interesting, and Kanaya listens closely to it. Especially since Mrs. Brisby is so emphatic about it, compared to her previous remarks.]

That sounds... like a very strong emotional connection. Wow.

Well, it's a bit more that I am a mother, and my children will either call me 'mother' or 'mom'. Because that's simply how it is.

I don't think there's a stronger love out there. I would do anything for my children. I would - and have - risked my life for them.

I was referring to the "mrs." but it is nice to know that "mom" is a synonymous title.

You risked your life for them... in what sort of way?

[There are cultural differences that should be explored here before she makes any unnecessarily revealing or alarming remarks.]

Ah, well... that's a very long story. And it gets a little complicated...

Oh. I'm just trying to understand if parents are basically like our lusii, or if there's a greater variance. If a summary wouldn't work, I guess I could ask other people about what parenthood is like... There's probably a few other parents here.

I don't know... I think... it's the closest relationship anyone could have.
