[What did Mrs. Brisby do today, one may ask. Usually there is no answer, as she does perfectly fine keeping to herself.

Not today. She shifts a bit uncomfortably, fidgeting. It's clear enough, at least, that she is incredibly uncomfortable.]

Can... someone explain what a "pet store" is to me? Or... explain what a "pet" really is.

I don't think I've ever seen such a dreadful and uncomfortable place...

[ N watches the mice in their cage, a troubled expression on his face. ]

The way they move... it's just... not right.

But I still don't like these cages. I don't understand how they can be so calm about being inside of them!

I do not either. They have so little room to live...

[ He remembers his own room. ]

Toys and nice things aren't enough to make up for no freedom.

[Mrs. Brisby is silent, before she climbs up onto the cages, trying to undo the latch.]

Help me...

[ How can he say no? He reaches around her, flipping the latch. ]

[She lifts the door, dropping into the cage and helping encourage the mice to leave the cages. She shouts at them, and oddly enough, they do seem to understand, and all bolt for the door instead of scattering around the store.]

We have to go!

[RUNNING RUNNING BEFORE WE GET IN TROUBLE.]

[ The sudden mouse revolution surprises N, but as soon as he realizes what is happening he hurries over, opening the door of the pet shop for them. ]

Mrs. Brisby bolts on all fours, hopefully leading N to follow her.]

[ N certainly does, wanting to watch out for her and the mice she has rescued. ]

[The mice scattered, and Mrs. Brisby herself took to an alley to hide, darting behind a garbage can.

Once she was safe, though... despite her panting and gasping, she started laughing.]

Hah... hahahah... promise me you won't ever do anything that stupid, N.

[ N had to smile. He crouched down, offering her his hands. ]

No promises.

[She stepped onto his hands, still laughing quite a bit.]

Well, just don't get caught. I wasn't really thinking.

[ N scoops her up, not minding. ]

It's all right. I think you did a good thing.

[She wobbles a bit from her fear of heights, but otherwise comfortably sits in his hands.]

I think so, too. But that's technically stealing, so it's a bad thing, too.

[ He keeps her safe, cupping his hands around her so she can't fall. ]

Stealing? I don't think you can own a living being, so I don't think you can steal them, either.

Oh, no, that was certainly theft. They're more in the wrong, but we're not exempt.

I hope you don't forget that.

[She rolls here eyes at that look. Sorry N, though you're bigger than her, she still sees you as a kid.]

Don't you give me the evil eye, young man. They're not right in the least, but so long as most people see it as stealing, it's stealing.

[ N shakes his head. ]

Just because most people see it as something doesn't make it true.

That's true, too. But it's also true that the rules are made by the majority. We're still wrong because we still broke a rule.

At any rate, I'll take responsibility for releasing the mice. I think I'll get in quite a bit less trouble than you would. You have better things to do than get in trouble for such small things. You're more than I am, at least. So you can definitely do more than just let them out of their cages.

[ N crouches down to gently return her to the ground. ]

Yes. I could.

[She hops off, smiling up at him.]

You humans are so much bigger than us mice in every way.

[ It is certainly a promise, though perhaps a more dangerous one than Brisby realizes. ]

Maybe you can change the rule. Or just... teach them, I guess. Because I don't think anyone would want to keep me as a pet, after talking to me.

[ Pause. ]

I'll figure something out. Those animals do not deserve that kind of treatment.
